Scott Boras Makes Bold Suggestions to Change World Series, Move MLB Draft

In a wide-ranging session with the press, super agent Scott Boras said he wanted to make the World Series a neutral site event and move the MLB Draft off All-Star Weekend.

No single agent has more pull in the baseball world than Scott Boras, who held his annual State of the Union media availability Wednesday afternoon.

Boras was asked about specific teams, clients and negotiations as the GM Meetings got underway in Scottsdale, Arizona, but perhaps his most viral quotes came from his takes on the league's biggest events. The agent notably tossed out a suggestion to overhaul the current playoff format, including the World Series.

According to Boras, all seven World Series games should be held at a neutral site.

Boras also said he wanted the structure of the second round, the Divisional Series, to give division winners a bigger advantage over Wild Card teams. In the scenario Boras cooked up, division winners would need to win three games to advance, while Wild Card teams would need to win four.

Boras' comment about the World Series drew the most ire from fans and media members alike, with many complaining that it would erase the home environments that make the Fall Classic so special.

After all, the World Series is not the Super Bowl – it takes place over the course of five-to-ten days, rather than one night, limiting how many fans would be able to fly out to pack the stands. The move would also presumably restrict home fans from seeing their own team on the biggest stage in the sport, to some extent.

Another idea that Boras tossed out was to revert back to the old league schedule in terms of the MLB Draft.

The MLB Draft traditionally took place in June, but it was moved to July back in 2021. The idea was to line the event up with All-Star weekend, but Boras continues to push for a reversion to the original timetable.

Boras is set for another busy winter, with Cody Bellinger Julio Urias hitting free agency and Pete Alonso and Juan Soto looking for extensions, among others. It remains to be seen if Boras gets his way in those negotiations, but the agent still appears to be focused on the bigger picture through it all.
