Seattle Mariners Do Something They Haven't Done in More Than 30 Years
The Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night by a score of 3-2. With that win, the Mariners moved to 26-24 on the season through 50 games.
They also accomplished a little bit of team history: By completing a four-game sweep of the A's, it's the first four-game sweep by the Mariners of the A's in Seattle since 1991.
Hopefully this series propels the Mariners forward. Picked by some as a World Series contender before the season, the M's have been plagued by a lethargic offense -- and have been hurt by injuries to Robbie Ray, Andres Munoz and Dylan Moore.
The Mariners are in still in fourth place in the American League West, but are now just 5.5 games out of first place, 2.5 out of second place and 1.5 out of third place. In the wild card (we know it's early), the Mariners are 2.5 games out of the last spot.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the A's are inching towards being one of the worst teams in baseball history. At 10-42, they are already 22.5 games out of first place and have lost eight in a row.
The A's took an early 2-0 lead on a Seth Brown home run but the Mariners got a pair of solo home runs from Ty France and a go-ahead walk from Eugenio Suarez in the eighth inning to get the victory.
The Mariners will host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night. First pitch is 10:10 p.m. ET.
