Another Brutal Break For This Seattle Mariners First Baseman
The hits just keep on coming for Seattle Mariners first baseman Evan White.
Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto announced on Seattle Sports 710 on Thursday that White will be out two months with a groin injury.
At this point, I'm not even sure what to call Evan White. He's not a big leaguer because he hasn't been one since 2021. He's not really a prospect either because he's played 84 major league games and won a gold glove in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
Right now? He's just a casualty of bad circumstance, I suppose.
White, 26, was drafted in the first round of the 2017 draft by the Mariners and was supposed to be one of the cornerstones of their rebuild. Armed with power at the plate, excellent athleticism and a great glove, the Mariners signed him to a six-year deal with a three-year option before he had ever played a major league game, but he just hasn't been able to stay healthy for the last several years.
White played 54 of the 60 games for the Mariners in the COVID season, winning a gold glove at first base while hitting .176.
He opened as the Mariners cleanup hitter in 2021 but played just 30 games that season before missing the rest of the season with a hip flexor injury.
In 2022, he underwent surgery for a sports hernia in March. He was pulled from two separate rehab assignments and only mustered 28 total games in AAA. He's been long passed by Ty France on the depth chart at the major league level.
This year, there was thought he could make the team out of spring training maybe as a DH or a utility player, but that didn't happen. He played two games for AAA Tacoma this year and now has this latest setback.
The Mariners are currently 2-5 and open up a weekend series with the Cleveland Guardians on Friday.
