Seattle Mariners' Reliever Paul Sewald Cementing Himself in Mariners History
Seattle Mariners reliever Paul Sewald has cemented himself as one of the best relievers in team history, as evidenced by stats put out on Sunday by the M's public relations team.
.@ItsPaulSewald ranks through a pitcher's first 150 games with the @Mariners:
WHIP - 1st (0.89)
Opp. AVG - 1st (.165)
SO/BB ratio - 1st (4.48)
ERA - T4th (2.91)
The Mariners have helped revitalized his career, and he has helped solidify the Mariners 'pen over the last few years. Sewald debuted in 2017 with the New York Mets but pitched to a 5.50 ERA in Queens. He helped the Mariners win 90+ games in each of the last two years, and helped Seattle make the playoffs in 2022.
He has often credited the Mariners for helping him develop his slider, which has been a staple of his repertoire in Seattle.
In addition to the stellar numbers above, Sewald has 42 saves since arriving in Seattle in 2021. His work has been extra valuable this year, as the team has dealt with an injury to star reliever Andres Munoz, which has kept him out most of the season.
The Mariners are currently 27-25 and in fourth place in the American League West. They'll finish out a series with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday at 4:10 p.m. ET.
The M's lost game one of the series, 11-6, and won game two, 5-0.
After the series with Pittsburgh, the Mariners will welcome the Yankees to Seattle. That will be the end of a 10-game homestand for Seattle, who is currently 5-1 on the homestand.
