Seattle Mariners Reportedly Open to Trading Important Reliever, Would Not Seemingly Go Over Well in Clubhouse
The Seattle Mariners have won three straight games to get to 53-50 on the season. They are now just 4.5 games back of the final wild card spot but despite that, they appear willing to trade high-leverage reliever Paul Sewald.
Per Insider Joel Sherman:
Told by 2 execs that Mariners are open to trading closer Paul Sewald feeling that in this pitcher-hungry market they can get a strong return (especially because Sewald can’t be a FA until after next season) plus Sea feels it has a pen deep enough to cover the loss of Sewald.
With Andres Munoz, Matt Brash and Justin Topa, the M's may have the ability to cover a loss of Sewald, but a trade of an important reliever doesn't seem like it would go over well in the Mariners clubhouse.
Per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, who spoke with catcher Cal Raleigh:
"You come into the clubhouse and you'd rather see 'The Office' or 'Parks and Rec' on the TVs, but it's on MLB Network every day. Something's going to happen. We don't know what it is. It's out of our control. We want to be in this thing. We don't want to be giving anybody away. We want to be adding, not subtracting."
The 33-year-old Sewald has been a revelation since joining the Mariners in 2021. He's got an 18-8 record in Seattle and has locked down 52 saves for the Mariners.
This year, he's 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA. He's struck out 60 batters in 43.0 innings and has 21 saves.
The Mariners play the Diamondbacks on Saturday night.
