Seattle Mariners Reportedly Balked at Trade Requests From American League Rival

According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the Seattle Mariners "rebuffed" the Boston Red Sox when they asked about the availability of any of their young pitchers.

According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the Seattle Mariners have "rebuffed" overtures from the Red Sox about the availability of the M's young starting pitchers.

The following comes from Red Sox personality Tyler Milliken, who relayed Speier's findings:

Couple nuggets from @alexspeier on the Red Sox hunt for starting pitching:

“The Sox have made at least one multiyear offer to a starter beyond Yamamoto and Lugo.”

Red Sox have shown interest in Jack Flaherty, along with all the names we’ve already seen rumored (Giolito, Imanaga, Montgomery, Snell).

Apparently the Mariners “rebuffed” the Red Sox when they approached them about any of their young arms.

And it’s still not confirmed whether the Red Sox have had their meeting with Yoshinobu Yamamoto yet.

It's unknown at this point which arms the Red Sox were asking about but they could have presumably been talking about George Kirby, Logan Gilbert, Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo.

The Red Sox have an improved farm system that includes position player talent like Ceddanne Rafaela and Marcelo Mayer, both of which would be interesting to the Mariners and their never-ending quest for offense. It's unclear if the Red Sox made those players available, and if they didn't, it's understandable why the Mariners shut them down.

Even if those players had been made available, it isn't enough to get Kirby or Gilbert, but Miller or Woo could have more palatable.

The Red Sox finished last in the American League East in 2023 while the Mariners finished third in the American League West.
