Seattle Mariners Reportedly Willing to Listen to Trade Overtures on Multiple Offensive Players
Heading into the Major League Baseball trade deadline on Tuesday, the Seattle Mariners are in a very precarious spot.
The M's are 54-51 and are still in the playoff race. They trail the first-place Texas Rangers by 5.5 games in the American League West and are just 4.5 games back in the wild card as well.
According to Tankathon, they also have the third-easiest schedule remaining, which signals an even greater chance to make a run.
That said, the up-and-down nature of the Mariners season doesn't inspire much confidence that the front office should go all-in on this year. In fact, the M's are reportedly considering selling or are considering a buy-sell hybrid.
Per Jon Morosi of MLB Network:
The Mariners' willingness to listen on Ty France and Teoscar Hernandez, per @BNightengale, is a significant development. Several teams -- Blue Jays, Brewers, Giants, Phillies -- are looking for right-handed hitters. In return, Seattle would need young bats.
Hernandez is a free agent at the end of the season so it makes sense that the M's would listen on him, but France still has two more years of team control left. That said, both players have struggled this season, with Hernandez hitting .238 and France hitting just .253. The M's would be selling low on France and would be signaling that they are looking towards next year.
The Mariners will open up a crucial three-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.
First pitch of that first game is 9:40 p.m. ET, so we'll see if that game's results changes the front office's mind in any way.
