Seattle Mariners' Teoscar Hernandez Makes a Trade with Some Young Fans on Friday
Seattle Mariners offseason acquisition Teoscar Hernandez is struggling on the field in his new city, but that doesn't mean he's not excelling off the field.
Hernandez made an intriguing deal with some young fans in Detroit on Friday night as the Mariners traveled to play the Tigers, trading his bat for some snacks.
The Mariners Twitter account documented the transaction:
The young fans held a sign that said "Tesocar, will you trade your bat for my snacks?" The sign had two different kinds of sunflower seeds attached to it, as well as a box of Frosted Flakes (appropriate for a Tigers game).
Hernandez took the snacks and also appears to have signed a Blue Jays' Hernandez jersey for the duo.
Hernandez was acquired from Toronto in the offseason for reliever Erik Swanson and a minor leaguer. He has struggled to gain traction offensively in Seattle, hitting just .212 in 146 at-bats. He does have seven home runs but has really struggled with strikeouts. He's already K'd 55 times this season.
He's a lifetime .259 with 140 homers and 396 RBIs. He had a career-high 32 home runs in 2021 and has hit at least 22 homers in each full season since 2018. He even pummeled 16 homers in the pandemic shortened 2020 season.
At the time of this posting, the Mariners are leading the Tigers, 6-0, in the bottom of the third.
Hernandez is 0-2, but he does now have some great snacks.
