Seattle Mariners Strike Another Trade, Send Injured Slugger to San Francisco Giants

The Seattle Mariners traded away outfielder AJ Pollock in advance of the trade deadline, sending him to San Francisco.

The Seattle Mariners traded away closer Paul Sewald on Monday, shipping him to Arizona in a monster pre-trade deadline deal.

It turns out the M's weren't done, sending injured veteran AJ Pollock to the National League West as well. He went to the San Francisco Giants.

We’ve traded OF AJ Pollock, INF/OF Mark Mathias and cash considerations to the @SFGiants in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

The 35-year-old Pollock is on the injured list right now but was a major disappointment in Seattle prior to getting hurt. He's got five home runs this season with 15 RBI. He's hitting just .173.

Brought in to be a lefty-pitching masher, Pollock never really gained a prominent role. As Jarred Kelenic blossomed and began to play every day, Pollock's role became more diminished, leading to more diminished results when he did play.

He's in his 12th year in the big leagues with the Diamondbacks, Dodgers, White Sox and Mariners. Lifetime, he's a .273 hitter who made the All-Star team back in 2015. Perhaps getting back to the National League West will give him a rejuvenation.

Mathias was not ranked in the Mariners top-30 prospects, per MLB.com.

The Mariners enter play on Monday at 54-51 and 5.5 games out of first place in the American League West. They are 4.5 games back of the final wild card spot.

As for the Giants, they are 3.0 games back in the National League West. They currently own the top spot in the wild card, leading by 1.0 game over the Marlins and Phillies.

The trade deadline is Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET.
