Seattle Mariners Swing Interesting Trade with Boston Red Sox
The Seattle Mariners acquired infielder Luis Urias on Friday night from the Boston Red Sox. In exchange, they sent Boston right-handed pitcher Isaiah Campbell.
Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times had the information:
Urias, 26, is a right-handed hitting utility infielder with 445 games of MLB experience. He posted a career .234/.333/.385 slash line in 1,641 plate appearances.
Campbell, 26, made his MLB debut this season and appeared in 27 games, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.83 ERA. In 28 2/3 innings, he struck out 33 hitters with 13 walks.
A few angles to this to consider:
1) The Red Sox are now being run by former MLB pitcher Craig Breslow. He has taken over for Chaim Bloom as Chief Baseball Officer and has stated the Red Sox need to get better on the mound. Campbell could slot into the Red Sox bullpen right away but could also serve as organizational depth for the starting rotation. The Sox have spoken about their need to have more starter depth at the upper levels of the minors.
2) As for the Mariners, Urias could serve as part of a second base platoon with the left-handed hitting Josh Rojas. He could also serve as a capable bench player for second base, shortstop and third base. He could have the role that Dylan Moore or Sam Haggerty have had in the last few years.
The Mariners finished 88-74 and were third in the American League West this year. Boston finished last in the American League East.
