The St. Louis Cardinals made some woeful history on Friday night in a 5-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers.

The Cardinals, who are now 10-23 on the season, have lost the opening game of each series this season.

They are now 0-11.

Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:

The Cardinals are the first MLB team to start a season 0-11 in series openers since the Royals in 1981 (0-13). Kansas City ended up making the playoffs that year by winning the AL West in the second half of the split season.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, there is no split season in 2023, so a playoff berth appears unlikely at this point.

Cardinals series opening losses:

March 30: L, 10-9 (TOR)

April 3rd: L, 8-4 (ATL)

April 7: L, 4-0 (MIL)

April 10: L, 7-4 (COL)

April 13: L, 5-0 (PIT)

April 17: L, 6-3 (ARI)

April 21: L, 5-2 (SEA)

April 24: L, 4-0 (SF)

April 28: L, 7-3 (LAD)

May 1: L, 5-1 (LAA)

May 5: L, 5-4 (DET)

It's been an amazing fall for the Cardinals, who won the National League Central just last season. They also still have several good players including catcher Willson Contreras, youngster Nolan Gorman, pitcher Jordan Montgomery, Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado.

As of this posting, the Cardinals have the fewest wins in the National League. They are 10.0 games out in the National League Central. The Pirates lead the division at 20-13 while the Brewers are 18-13, the Cubs are 16-16 and the Reds are 13-19.
