Starting Lineups, Starting Pitchers for San Diego Padres vs. Chicago Cubs Game Wednesday
The San Diego Padres (12-13) and Chicago Cubs (13-9) will play game two of a three-game series at Wrigley Field Wednesday night at 7:40 p.m. ET.
The Padres will try to get back to .500 after suffering an embarrassing 6-0 loss in Chicago Tuesday night. Newly signed Michael Wacha (2-1, 7.08 ERA) will make his fifth start of the season Wednesday night. Wacha signed a free agent contract with the Padres over the winter, after pitching for the Boston Red Sox in 2022. Wacha has allowed four runs or more in three of his four starts this season. In his third start, April 14 versus the Milwaukee Brewers, Wacha allowed seven runs off eleven hits, two home runs and a walk.
The Cubs are trotting out Drew Smyly (2-1, 3.13 ERA) on the mound Wednesday night. Smyly nearly threw a perfect game in his last start, Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Smyly's perfect game bid ended in the top of the eighth inning on a slow roller from Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman. Smyly and catcher Yan Gomes collided, as both hustled to the ball, attempting to make a play.
