Tampa Bay Rays Manager Kevin Cash Says Pitcher Jeffrey Springs Likely to Miss Time
The Tampa Bay Rays, out to a historically good 13-0 start this season, are preparing themselves to be without starting pitcher Jeffrey Springs, who left Thursday's start with an injury.
Springs left Thursday's game against the Boston Red Sox in the top of the fourth inning with an arm injury and was later diagnosed with ulnar neuritis. You can see what he said about the injury here.
He was undergoing testing on Friday and while all the results aren't in yet, his manager Kevin Cash says it's fair to say that he'll miss time.
Springs has been excellent this season for Tampa Bay. He's 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA in 16 innings. He had allowed one run through three innings on Thursday before leaving.
For his career, he's 21-10 in 138 career games, posting a 3.40 ERA. He made his major league debut in 2018 with the Texas Rangers and spent part of 2020 with the Boston Red Sox before going to Tampa for the last three years.
Should he have to go on the injured list, he'll join injured Rays starters Tyler Glasnow and Zach Eflin there. Eflin was placed on the injured list just this week.
The Rays haven't announced any plan to replace Springs at this time, but it's fair to wonder if they could turn back to top prospect Taj Bradley, who made his major league debut on Wednesday against the Red Sox, got the win, and then was sent down.
The Rays take on the Toronto Blue Jays for a weekend series. Game 1 begins Friday at 7:07 p.m. ET.
