Tampa Bay Rays Shake Up Front Office Once Again
After losing executive Peter Bendix (who became the President of Baseball Operations for the Miami Marlins), the Tampa Bay Rays have continued to alter and tweak their front office.
Per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times:
Kevin Ibach worked his way from a pro scout with the Rays into the front office and up to vice president of player personnel, with a significant role in player acquisition.
Wednesday, he was named an assistant general manager and shifted to vice president of baseball operations. Ibach, 45, will team with three other assistant GMs — Will Cousins, Chanda Lawdermilk and Carlos Rodriguez — to share the duties of previous general manager Peter Bendix.
It's certainly a good step up for Ibach but it points to an interesting dynamic with the Rays. They don't have a clear hierarchy. Erik Neander runs the baseball operations and entrusts all four AGMs to various tasks, but we don't know the order in the building.
Per the Rays' website:
Ibach will remain focused on player development, pro personnel and pro scouting, according to the club’s announcement, with strategy and daily oversight of the department added to his duties. Ibach joined the Rays as a pro scout in October 2012, was promoted to pro scouting director in November ’15 and became senior director of pro personnel and pro scouting in January '20.
The Rays are entering a very interesting 2024 season. They won 99 games a season ago and are always competitive, but with the Wander Franco situation hanging over their heads and numerous pitching injuries, they appear primed for a regression.
