The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles Made Bizarre Baseball History This Week
We've become fans of bizarre baseball history here at Fastball and FanNation.
Earlier in the year, we told you this little diddy about the Los Angeles Angels.
So if you like that kind of stuff, we've got another one for you. Earlier this week, the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles made bizarre baseball history.
According to OptaStats:
"Tonight @RedSox center fielder Jarren Duran hit a grand slam in the 3rd inning. @Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins followed suit in the 9th inning. It's the first time in MLB history that opposing center fielders each hit a grand slam in the same game."
That game was on Tuesday night in Baltimore. The Red Sox won, 8-6, and you can see Duran's home run here.
Baseball has been played for so long, I'm shocked when anything happens for the first time, so this one is surprising. Especially with so many good matchups in history, it's hard to believe we never got an A-Rod/Jeter shortstop grand slam battle, or a Mark McGwire/Rafael Palmeiro first base grand slam battle. David Ortiz/Nelson Cruz at DH, it is surprising we've never seen this before.
As for the players involved, Duran is off to a great start for the Red Sox this year. After hitting .215 and .221 in limited action in each of the last two years, he's hitting .400 through 10 games this season with five doubles, 10 RBI and that home run.
For Mullins, he's hitting .271 with three home runs, 20 RBI and 10 stolen bases. He's got an .833 OPS for the Orioles, who are 16-8 on the season.
