The San Francisco Giants Had the "Full Throttle" Offseason that the Boston Red Sox Promised to Have
The Boston Red Sox should take notes from the San Francisco Giants.
Both organizations are proud ones, with rich histories, championship pedigrees, and big fanbases with high expectations.
Both organizations disappointed those fanbases in 2023, with the Red Sox finishing last in the American League East and the Giants finishing fourth in the National League West.
While the Red Sox vowed to go "full throttle" this offseason, they did anything but. The Giants, on the other hand, put together perhaps the best offseason outside of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Per Jon Couture of the Boston Globe on social media:
There was a time this winter when the Giants and #RedSox felt on similar tracks given recent struggles in a big market, fan backlash, and the like. One has reacted as people expect their team to react in these circumstances. The other has not.
What's even more frustrating for Red Sox fans is that the Giants were able to capitalize on the tough market for players and landed good players on very team-friendly deals. While it's unfortunate that certain players made less than they probably should have, it's also unfortunate that the Red Sox were unwiling or unable to meet even these prices.
Per @RedSoxStats on social media:
6-113 Lee
2-62 Snell
3-54 Chapman
4-44 Hicks
3-42 Soler
2-8 Murphy
1-1 Davis
And in addition to acquiring those players, the Giants also traded for former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray. He is injured until at least midseason and remains a wild card, but that's still a potentially impactful arm that could help down the stretch, while the Red Sox will be rolling with a makeshift pitching staff that has already seen massive attrition thanks to Lucas Giolito's injury.
Apparently "full throttle" lives on the West Coast.
