The Seattle Mariners All of a Sudden Can't Strike Anybody Out
The Seattle Mariners have suffered back-to-back losses against the Cincinnati Reds, including a walk-off loss on Tuesday night.
They've lost three straight games total when you include Sunday's loss against the New York Mets.
As a result of the recent downturn, the M's are now 77-61 and have fallen out of first place in the American League West. They hold the second wild card spot, but just by 0.5 games over the Toronto Blue Jays.
In an interesting development, the M's two losses in Cincinnati have come with a massive inability to miss bats on the mound.
Per Mariners Insider Luke Arkins:
Not-so-fun fact: #Mariners pitchers have struck out four batters in their last two games. Only the Royals have recorded fewer strikeouts (3) in a two-game span (July 24-25) this season.
Yeesh. The Royals are battling for the worst record in baseball so that's not the company you want to be keeping. The M's have used rookies in each of the two starts in Cincy (Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller) so there's always thought about each of them hitting the "rookie wall," but even the M's top relievers haven't missed bats either. Justin Topa, Gabe Speier and Andres Munoz each pitched in the loss on Tuesday.
The M's and Reds will play again on Wednesday night in a critical battle for Seattle. Logan Gilbert will take the mound against righty Lyon Richardson.
Gilbert is 12-5 with a 3.56 ERA while Richardson is 0-1 with a 6.75.
The Reds are 73-68.
