Toronto Blue Jays Come to Terms with Veteran INF
On Tuesday, the Toronto Blue Jays signed veteran outfielder Kevin Kiermaier to a one-year deal. As a result of this signing, the Jays are likely out of the sweepstakes for free agent slugger Cody Bellinger.
Having addressed the outfield needs, the Jays were then free to address their infield concerns, which they have done on Wednesday by signing veteran Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who most recently played for the New York Yankees.
Per Robert Murray of Fansided:
Free-agent infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a two-year, $15 million contract, pending physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. The deal includes $1 million in incentives.
The Jays had been linked to "IKF" all offseason and now they get their man. At this time, it's not known whether or not Kiner-Falefa will become the Jays' starting third baseman and replace free agent Matt Chapman, or if he'll be a super utility man in the way that Whit Merrifield previously was for Toronto.
He won a Gold Glove at third base for the Texas Rangers in 2020.
He's spent four years with the Rangers and two with the Yankees. Lifetime, he's a career .261 hitter with a .314 on-base percentage. He doesn't hit for much power, as evidenced by his 26 career home runs, but he has a lot of speed and stole a career-high 22 bags in 2022.
Toronto finished third in the American League East last season and lost in the wild card round of the playoffs.
