Toronto Blue Jays Add Former Seattle Mariners All-Star on Minor League Deal
Former All-Star Daniel Vogelbach has signed a minor league deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. He'll get an invite to spring training.
From Robert Murray of Fansided on social media:
Free-agent designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach and the Toronto Blue Jays are in agreement on a contract, according to sources familiar with the deal.
Vogelbach has spent time with the Blue Jays before, playing two games in Toronto during the COVID 2020 season.
In total, the 31-year-old has spent parts of eight years in the big leagues with the Mariners, Blue Jays, Brewers, Pirates and Mets.
His best year was 2019, when he made the All-Star team for Seattle. That year, he hit 30 homers and drove in 76. He played 144 games that season, which is the high-water mark of his career.
He was let go by Seattle during the COVID 2020 season after just 18 games before latching on with Toronto. He played 104 games for the Mets in 2023, hitting 13 homers and bringing in 48.
Given the nature of his deal, there's no guarantee that Vogelbach will make the Blue Jays' roster, but he represents an interesting option at designated hitter or as a pinch-hitter. He hit .246 against right-handers last year with a .353 OPS and a .780 slugging, so he is also a good option in some platoon/late game situations.
Vogelbach is the second former All-Star the team has brought in in as many days, having also signed Eduardo Escobar on Thursday.
The Blue Jays are coming off a 2023 in which they finished third in the American League East.
