Tyler Glasnow Trade Talks Stall as Tampa Bay Rays Wait For Free Agency Dominoes to Fall
The Tampa Bay Rays are engaged in trade talks surrounding starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported Friday morning, but the discussions are still in a preliminary stage.
Per Morosi, things will start heating up in regards to Glasnow once the top free agent pitchers sign.
The top starting pitchers on the open market, for context, are Blake Snell, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Aaron Nola, Jordan Montgomery and Sonny Gray, plus Eduardo Rodriguez, Lucas Giolito, Marcus Stroman and Shoto Imanaga.
There have been rumors about the Rays possibly dealing Glasnow all offseason, considering the club is in line for a record-high payroll in 2024. Glasnow, who is on a $25 million expiring contract, could become a casualty of some cost-cutting, despite setting career highs in strikeouts and innings pitched in 2023.
The 30-year-old righty went 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA, 1.083 WHIP and 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings in his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2021.
The Rays initially acquired Glasnow at the 2018 trade deadline, as he was one of the key pieces the Pittsburgh Pirates gave up to get All-Star pitcher Chris Archer. He transitioned from the bullpen into a starting role with Tampa Bay, which he has held onto for the past six seasons.
Although most of those six campaigns have been injury-plagued, Glasnow still boasts a 3.20 ERA, 1.025 WHIP, 12.2 strikeouts per nine innings and an 8.6 WAR across 71 starts with the Rays.
Glasnow's market will be interesting to track as the top free agents start to find new homes, considering his injury history and the fact that he is only under contract for one more year.
