Washington Nationals Manager Davey Martinez Goes Viral, Calls Out Umpires After Walk-Off Loss to Houston Astros
The Houston Astros beat the Washington Nationals in a controversial walk-off fashion on Wednesday night in Houston.
The game was tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Astros had the bases loaded and one out with Jake Meyers at the plate.
The Nationals infield was drawn in and Meyers hit a ground ball to CJ Abrams at shortstop. Abrams fired home for the force out there while the catcher threw to first to try to get the double play. Instead of a game-ending double play, the ball hit Meyers and bounced away, allowing Jose Abreu to score the game-winning run from third base.
Well, after the game, Nationals manager Davey Martinez showed up at his postgame press conference with a photograph of Meyers running inside the base line. You can see his comments below:
"There it is. Right there. Take a good look at it. Is that on the line? I don't think so. I'm over this play, seriously ... we lost a game and he had nothing to say about it because he can't make the right call. Brutal. Brutal."
From this writer's perspective, the picture certainly doesn't lie. Meyers was running inside the base line and Martinez's frustrations are justified.
The loss dropped the Nationals to 26-40 on the season. They are currently in last place in the National League East and have the fewest wins in the National League.
The win moved the Astros to 39-29 and 3.5 games back in the American League West.
