This Stat Shows Just How Bad it is For the Seattle Mariners Right Now
The Seattle Mariners are lucky that the San Diego Padres and New York Mets exist.
Those two big-spending powerhouses and their underachieving seasons have taken the heat off the Mariners nationally, but Mariners fans themselves are fed up with the product on the field.
After finally breaking the playoff drought in 2022, expectations were high for the 2023 M's, but the team has failed to live up to them in nearly every way.
Seattle lost again on Wednesday to the woeful Washington Nationals, one day after falling in extra innings after failing to score with the bases loaded and no one out. The final score was 4-1 as the M's were carved up over seven innings by Nationals starter Patrick Corbin, who entered the game with a league-worst nine losses and a 5.32 ERA.
Seattle is now 38-41 and has lost three straight series to the Yankees, Orioles and Nationals. What's even worse is that the M's won the first game of the last two series and weren't able to capitalize and win the series.
Just how bad is it right now for the M's? This stat from Mariners Insider Tim Booth says it all:
This is the first time since Aug. 21, 2019 that Patrick Corbin has thrown seven shutout innings.
Corbin used to be one of the best pitchers in baseball but had an ERA of 6.31 in 2022 and 5.82 in 2020, yet he was able to dominate the Mariners with nothing but sliders and fastballs.
He struck out nine over those seven innings.
The Mariners will take on the league-best Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
