WATCH: Boston Red Sox' Yu Chang Hits Go-Ahead Home Run For First Hit of Season
Boston Red Sox shortstop Yu Chang got his first hit of the season on Saturday afternoon, blasting a two-run home run off of Los Angeles Angels starter Tyler Anderson.
Chang had been mired in an 0-28 slump dating back to last season. This blast gave the Red Sox a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
What's ironic about Chang's slump this season is that he was so hot during the World Baseball Classic, that he was named MVP of Pool A. He played for Chinese Taipei in the classic alongside Cuba, Italy, the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Panama.
The 27-year-old Chang is in his fifth year in the major leagues. He's well traveled, too. He spent the first three years of his career with the Cleveland Guardians but played for four teams in 2022: Cleveland, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston.
For his career, he's a .207 hitter with 15 home runs. After the homer on Saturday, he's at .056 for this season. He's playing shortstop more for the Red Sox right now because an injury in the outfield has forced Enrique Hernandez to move from shortstop to centerfield, leaving short for Chang.
Chang's home run has been part of a slugfest on Saturday at Fenway Park. Angels 1B Gio Urshela hit a grand slam for the Angels while Rafael Devers has a two-run homer for Boston as well.
At the time of this posting, the Red Sox lead the Angels, 6-5 in the top of the fifth inning.
Boston entered this game at 6-8 overall while the Angels came in at 7-6.
