WATCH: Houston Astros Catcher Martin Maldonado Mic'd Up on Sunday Night Baseball
Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado made history on Sunday night, becoming the first catcher to be mic'd up on 'Sunday Night Baseball' as the Astros hosted the Rangers.
Maldonado was mic'd up for the top of the second inning and you can hear a portion of the conversation from that inning below.
Maldonado talked with the crew of Karl Ravech, David Cone, and Eduardo Perez about the plan of attack for pitcher Framber Valdez and had a little fun with Rangers batter Adolis Garcia to start the inning.
It was certainly a cool and innovative idea but it was unfortunate that his voice was so muffled when hidden behind the mask. If ESPN is to do this in the future, they'll need to make sure the catcher does most of the talking with the mask not on or pulled away from the face.
The Rangers ended up winning the game, 9-1, to take the series. With the win, Texas is now 9-6 and in first place in the American League West, while the Astros are 7-9 with the loss and in fourth place.
Maldonado, 36, is in his 13th year in the majors. He helped the Astros win the World Series in 2022 and was an integral part of leading the pitching staff.
He's also played for the Milwaukee Brewers, the Los Angeles Angels, the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago Cubs.
The Astros will open up a series on Monday at home against the Blue Jays while the Rangers will travel to Kansas City.
