Tuesday night, Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. ripped his fifth home run of the season, taking Baltimore Orioles pitcher Tyler Wells deep to left field.

Witt's long ball occurred in the bottom of the first inning Tuesday night with the bases empty, putting Kansas City up 1-0.

Witt entered play Tuesday night batting .222 with a .266 On Base Percentage and .659 OPS.

The Royals selected Witt with the second overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, out of Colleyville Heritage High School in Colleyville, Texas. He was drafted just one pick behind catcher Adley Rutschman. Both players have made their presence known since making their Major League debuts last season.

Witt crushed 20 home runs in 150 games a season ago. Earlier this spring, he played for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic.

The Royals are off to a poor start to begin the season. Entering play Tuesday night, the club was 7-22 in the American League Central, the second-worst record in Major League Baseball. Only the Oakland Athletics have a worse record, at 6-23.

Since winning the World Series in 2015, the Royals haven't posted a winning season or made the playoffs. The club has posted a losing record in five straight seasons.

Though 2023 appears to be a rebuilding year for Kansas City, the Royals hope that Witt can be a key cornerstone player of its next great championship team.
