WATCH: Pirates' 33 Year-Old Rookie Makes MLB Debut in Win Over Dodgers
33-year-old rookie Drew Maggi made his Major League debut Wednesday night, late in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 8-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
In his 14th professional season, Maggi finally made it to the big leagues. The infielder received his call to the show Sunday. With his team leading 8-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning and with his family in attendance, Maggi was called on to pinch hit for designated hitter Andrew McCutchen. As Maggi strode to the plate, he received a standing ovation from Pirates fans.
Maggi had made 3,846 minor league at bats. In his first at bat at the Major League level, Maggi took a moment to savor the experience and enjoy the moment. He was charged with a pitch clock violation, resulting in a strikeout. Behind in the count 0-1, Maggi struck to Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia, but still emerged as the Pirates' star of the evening.
After the game, Maggi was interviewed on the field by Robby Incmikoski, while mic'd up over the loud speakers at PNC Park.
"Anything's possible," Maggi said. "Never give up, no matter what you're doing. If you love something, go for it. This is special to me. I'll never forget this whole experience. You know, I didn't expect it, but don't give up."
The Pirates selected Maggi in the 15th round of the 2010 MLB Draft out of Arizona State University. Maggi was a product of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, Arizona. Maggi's story is a testament to his hard work and determination.
