WATCH: Texas Rangers Pitcher Ties American League History
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Andrew Heaney tied some history on Monday night, striking out nine consecutive batters against the Kansas City Royals. That tied the American League record.
Sarah Langs of MLB.com added in separate tweets that Heaney is the 13th player in MLB history to strike out nine consecutive batters. She adds that the record is 10, by Aaron Nola of the Phillies, Corbin Burnes of the Brewers and Hall of Famer Tom Seaver.
Heaney started his streak in the top of the top of the first inning by getting Matt Duffy swinging, followed by Nicky Lopez. In the second inning, he struck out the side by getting Hunter Dozier swinging, Nate Eaton swinging and Jackie Bradley Jr. looking. In the top of the third, he got Bobby Witt Jr., Edward Olivares and Vinnie Pasquantino swinging. In the fourth, the streak ended after he struck out Salvador Perez. Duffy broke the streak with a fly out to right field.
As of this posting, Heaney has gone 4.1 innings, allowing one unearned run with 10 total strikeouts and one walk.
He signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Rangers in the offseason. He spent last year with the Dodgers, going 4-4 with a 3.10 ERA in 16 appearances. He's also pitched for the Yankees, Angels and Marlins in his career.
The Rangers have gotten home runs from Corey Seager and Jonah Heim in the game and lead 4-1 at this point.
Texas entered play at 5-4 on the season while Kansas City came in at 3-7.
