The Toronto Blue Jays picked up their eighth win of the season on Wednesday night, beating the Detroit Tigers, 4-3, at Rogers Centre.

The win moves the Jays to 8-4 while the loss drops the Tigers to 2-9 on the season.

The Blue Jays trailed 3-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning but tied the game on dueling sacrifice flies by Whit Merrifield and Alejandro Kirk.

That set the stage for extra innings, where George Springer won the game with a bounding single past a drawn-in infield.

The hit came off Jose Cisnero and improved Springer to 2-5 on the night. He's now hitting .269 on the young season.

A day after scoring nine runs, offense was tough to come by for Toronto early. They could only muster one run through six innings against Tigers starter Eduardo Rodriguez. He struck out three and walked one.

For the Blue Jays on the mound, Kevin Gausman worked eight innings and allowed three earned runs. He walked zero and struck out 11. Jordan Romano got the win in relief, throwing a scoreless 10th inning.

These two teams will finish the series on Thursday night at 7:07 p.m. ET.

The Blue Jays at 8-4 are just tied for second in the American League East. The Rays are out to a 12-0 start, which is the best start in the majors since 1987.

AL East standings:

Rays, 12-0

Yankees, 8-4

Jays, 8-4

Orioles, 6-6

Red Sox, 5-7

As for the Tigers, they are in last place in the AL Central and have the fewest wins in baseball.
