Aiming to make the playoffs for the first time since the COVID-shortened 2020 season, the Cincinnati Reds are putting together a magical run.

The Reds are in first place in the National League Central by 2.0 games over the Milwaukee Brewers, one year after losing 100 games.

The Reds improved play this year has come as a result of an infusion of young talent including Matt McLain, Andrew Abbott, Spencer Steer, Brandon Williamson and superstar Elly De La Cruz.

The Reds have gotten contributions from each of those players and have also put together a nice run of winning games they probably shouldn't be winning.

Per Jesse Rogers of ESPN:

Elly De La Cruz has been in the big leagues for exactly one month. The Reds are 21-6. From 5 under to 10 over.

Fun stat if you're a fan: The Reds are 18-17 on the road when trailing in games this season. They are the only team in MLB to have a winning record in that situation.

Coming back from a deficit on the road in Major League Baseball isn't easy, but it's the kind of thing you do when you're putting together a special year.

The Reds will get to put that stat to the test this weekend, as they'll be on the road in a major series with the same Brewers who are chasing them.

Game one of the series is Friday at 8:10 p.m. ET. Abbott (4-0, 1.21 ERA) will pitch against former Cy Young winner Corbin Burnes (6-5, 4.00 ERA).
