San Francisco Giants' 3B Does Something Rarely Done Since 1900 in Win on Friday
After signing a contract late in spring training with the San Francisco Giants, new third baseman Matt Chapman put together a historic performance on Friday night as the Giants beat the San Diego Padres, 8-3.
The win moved the Giants to 1-1 on the young season as Chapman went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI. He's hitting .444 through the first two games of the season.
Chapman's big performance put him in a rare group in team history, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
multi-HR game in 1 of first 2 games with Giants, since 1900:
Today Matt Chapman
4/13/97 Mark Lewis
7/5/87 Kevin Mitchell
4/16/52 Bob Elliott
the 3 other than Chapman were in team debut
Any time you accomplish something that has only been done four times since 1900, you're doing something right.
The 30-year-old Chapman signed a three-year contract worth $54 million this offseason. He's in his eighth season with the Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays, and Giants.
Lifetime, he's a .241 hitter with 157 homers. Known as an excellent defensive player, he's a four-time Gold Glover, a two-time Platinum Glove winner and a one-time All-Star.
In addition to Chapman, the Giants also signed Jung-Hoo Lee, Jorge Soler and Jordan Hicks this offseason. They also traded for former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray, all in an effort to contend in the deeply talented National League West.
The Giants and Padres will play again on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. ET. Hicks will pitch for San Francisco against Dylan Cease, who will make his debut for the Padres.
