A matchup between top welterweight contenders Kevin Holland and Jack Della Maddalena is reportedly close to being booked as the co-main event for the UFC Fight Night card on Mexican Independence Day.

The UFC has taken to reserving title fights for major PPV events in recent years, but the decision to headline “Noche UFC” on September 16 with a rematch for the women’s flyweight belt between Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko is a notable break from that trend.
A number of other bouts that include some of the UFC’s top Mexican fighters have also been added to help fill out what looks to be a strong card, and apparently a matchup between Holland and Della Maddalena is close to being finalized as the night’s co-main event. The matchup was first reported by user 'Standemup' on Twitter, and later reaffirmed by multiple reporters.

Della Maddalena recently made headlines when he had two different opponents pull out of a planned fight at UFC 290, and the Australian ended up staying in Las Vegas for an extra week to take on the debuting Bassil Hafez the following weekend.
The 26-year-old had stopped all four of his previous UFC opponents in the first round but had a difficult time with Hafez, and his split decision victory in that bout unfortunately slowed some of the considerable momentum he'd accumulated.
Holland now has back-to-back wins after he submitted Michael Chiesa in the first round at UFC 291, and if the matchup with Della Maddalena comes together it will be a chance for each man to try and crack the welterweight Top 10 in what could play out as an entertaining striking battle at Noche UFC.
