A scary sequence at Battlefield Fight League this week saw one fighter slam an opponent on his head to escape a submission attempt and finish the fight.

BFL is one of Canada’s top regional promotions, and this week’s BFL 78 in Vancouver, British Colombia featured a lightweight matchup between David Briones and Navid Zanganeh.

Briones was making his promotional debut for BFL after previously competing in his native Mexico, while all of Zanaganeh’s pro bouts have taken place under the Canadian promotion’s banner.

“Toquinho” entered the night having finished three out of his four pro victories via submission, and in the fight’s opening round it looked as if Briones might add another stoppage to his record when he set up a buggy choke from bottom position.

No stranger to submissions himself, Zanganeh decided to escape the choke in a creative and admittedly brutal manner by lifting Briones up in order to slam him to the mat a couple times.

The visual of the slams was particularly nasty given that Briones’ head appeared to land directly on the mat, and the Mexican fighter was forced to release the choke and cover up before Zanganeh landed a few hard right hands to end the fight.

The violent stoppage gave Zanganeh back-to-back wins after he scored a 45-second submission victory back in June, and while Briones unfortunately suffered his third-straight loss the main concern following BFL 78 will be that the 35-year-old didn’t suffer any serious damage from the fight's finishing sequence.
