Mexico is heavily represented at UFC 290 with Brandon Moreno and Yair Rodriguez fighting in championship bouts. There are five Mexican-born fighters on the card in total, but not many came in with as much hype as undefeated women’s strawweight Yazmin Jauregui.

Jauregui came into her against Denise Gomes fight with an impressive 10-0 record and back-to-back UFC wins under her belt. Jauregui was a huge favorite. Gomes did not care.

With the first punch that connected in the fight, Gomes dropped Jauregui and followed it with a barrage of strikes. Jauregui was able to grab onto the leg of Gomes but was stuck along the fence and ate punches until referee Jason Herzog stepped in to stop the fight.

The Mexican fighter immediately got to her feet and protested the stoppage. The fight deserved to be stopped after the number of unanswered strikes, but in her defense, Herzog was very timid in the way he separated the fighters.

The 20-second knockout goes down as the fastest finish in UFC strawweight history. Shockingly, it was not the quickest finish so far at UFC 290 as men’s flyweight Jesus Aguilar scored a 17-second knockout over Shannon Ross

Almost everyone expected the undefeated fighter to win the fight, but Gomes seemed anything but surprised after pulling off the upset.

“Victory. That's what we anticipated. I mean a lot of people underestimated me, a lot of people tried to diminish me and put me down,” Gomes said. “We knew we were going to win.”

Gomes has now put her name on the map on a giant fight card, and with back-to-back knockouts now becomes one of the scarier matchups in the strawweight division.
