UFC News: Dustin Poirier ‘Back to Work’, Teases UFC Title Fight

American Top Team’s Poirier knows something we don’t

Dustin Poirier is beginning training camp for what could be a career-defining moment.

The former UFC interim lightweight champion has been on the cusp of undisputed status before but was just short of that feat in title fights against all-time greats Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira.

With top lightweights battling it out at UFC 300, a third crack at the belt isn’t out of the question for the promotional veteran Poirier, and current champion Islam Makhachev seems to be on board with the idea, though he doesn’t believe ‘The Diamond’ is all that deserving of one more chance.

Regardless of what the reigning champ or anybody else thinks, Poirier, 35, is still in hot pursuit of making his lifelong dream a reality. That opportunity may come sooner rather than later as the UFC veteran gears up for his next training camp at American Top Team.

“Looks like it's back to work,” Poirier wrote on Instagram on Monday.

Poirier went on a similar tangent last week, noting a title fight announcement with Makhachev could very well be on the way.

“Cooking up something for [y’all],” Poirier wrote on ‘X’ last Thursday. “I Want that belt @AliAbdelaziz00 @danawhite @MAKHACHEVMMA.”

Makhachev has made it crystal clear that he wants to fight ‘The Diamond’ this summer and with UFC 302 recently being announced for June 1 in Newark, New Jersey, the promotion might end up heading in that very direction.

“Poirier is free now. He showed an excellent performance and scored a beautiful knockout [over Benoit Saint-Denis]. He’s free now, he’s healthy, and I asked him to fight in June.”
