It's common consensus that Colby Covington didn't back up his trash-talk inside the octagon at UFC 296.

UFC 296 VIDEO: Leon Edwards Defeats Colby Covington to Retain Gold

"Chaos" built hype for the fight, allegedly raising PPV sales 25% by insulting Leon Edward's late father at the pre-fight presser, only to put on a career-worst performance on the night.

One such fighter with contempt for Covington's performance is former lightweight challenger Michael Chandler. "Iron" took to Twitter during the fight to criticize Covington's offense amongst other factors:

"Through three rounds, the guy who calls out the “triggered” sure is afraid to pull the trigger.

"Through four rounds Colby has taken 1776 punches to the face and his only offense is a few sloppy takedowns.

"If Colby’s offense tonight was an accurate depiction of the U.S. strength, we would have never gotten our independence from Britain, lost WWI and got demoralized in WWII by a landslide. Colby, you suck."

Speaking to InsideFighting after UFC 296, Chandler elaborated on his stance:

"[Covington's performance] was less than weak... Only because Colby made such a big deal out of it."

Chandler also gave his thoughts on potentially moving up and fighting Covington at welterweight:

"Not now! Not now. Not after that performance. Colby should be fighting on the prelims."

Chandler should be in line for the biggest fight of his career should Conor McGregor return in 2024.
