Max Holloway wasn’t about to miss his former opponent Dustin Poirier throw down with Benoit Saint-Denis in the co-main event of UFC 299.

Last Saturday’s UFC 299 card in Miami was one of the biggest combat sports events of the year, and ahead of the action quite a significant part of the UFC fan base appeared to be as excited for the lightweight matchup between Poirier and Saint-Denis as they were for the night’s headlining title fight.

Holloway and Poirier first met at featherweight before they fought for the interim lightweight belt at UFC 236, and “Blessed” shared how impressed he was with his former opponent snapping Saint-Denis' winning streak based on the live reaction posted on his YouTube channel (skip to 6:15).

The former featherweight king noted that Poirier’s power made the difference at UFC 299, but even “The Diamond” poked fun at himself after the event for his early attempts to end the fight with some questionably timed guillotine chokes.

Fans pointed to Poirier’s punching power as the defining factor that allowed him to best Holloway at lightweight five years ago, and “Blessed” will test his skills in the lightweight division again at UFC 300 when he challenges Justin Gaethje for the BMF title.

The knockout-win over Saint-Denis put Poirier right back in the conversation for a shot at the lightweight belt, although admittedly most of the title talk in the aftermath of UFC 299 has revolved around whether bantamweight king Sean O’Malley should face Merab Dvalishvili or move up to featherweight for a matchup with Ilia Topuria.
