“The Underground King” first took on Poirier at UFC 211 in a bout that unfortunately ended late in the second round when Alvarez landed an illegal knee. The two lightweights met again in a UFC Fight Night main event just over a year later, and their second meeting saw “The Diamond” stop the former UFC and Bellator champion in the second round.
The rematch with Poirier ended up being Alvarez’s final UFC bout before he joined ONE Championship in 2019, but based on a recent exchange the two men had it appears that the 39-year-old wouldn't be opposed to a trilogy fight with the UFC star.
"You got it back in the 2nd fight Respect (fist) but let’s be real… I out dogged you the first match up I’d def do it again if we rumbled a 3rd ." - Alvarez said.

Alvarez experienced mixed success across four fights with ONE Championship, but earlier this year he did make his BKFC debut against former UFC title challenger Chad Mendes and won the fight via split decision.
“The Diamond” won the interim lightweight belt following his rematch with Alvarez before being submitted by Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification bout at UFC 242.
The 34-year-old also came up short in his second title shot against Charles Oliveira in 2021, and in his most recent fight Poirier had a chance to claim the vacant BMF title in a rematch with Justin Gaethje but was caught by a head kick in the second round.
