UFC Legend Shoots Down Title Fight as Potential UFC 300 Main Event

Is this title fight a suitable main event for UFC 300?

Fans are hopeful that the main event for UFC 300 will finally be revealed this week, but UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier is adamant that there’s one title fight that can’t serve as the card’s headlining bout.

Fan anticipation for UFC 300 has reached a fever pitch with less than three months to go until April 13, and even though a number of massive fights have already been announced the card still currently lacks a main event.

UFC CEO Dana White looks poised to finally reveal the UFC 300 headliner based on a recent Instagram post, and Cormier took it upon himself to explain why he hopes the main event isn't a welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad.

Leon Edwards UFC 300

Cormier doesn't believe Edwards' next title defense can headline UFC 300.

“What I will say about UFC 300, it’s missing a big fight,” Cormier said on DC & RC. “That big fight that it’s missing has to have a backstory. That big fight has to have bad blood. That big fight has to bring the eyeballs. So, it can’t be Belal Muhammad and Leon Edwards, because that just doesn’t have enough to it. While it’s a fantastic fight, it doesn’t have enough to it for it to be the main event.”

White recently teased that a date for Edwards’ next welterweight title defense against Muhammad would be revealed soon, and perhaps the timing of that statement made Cormier worry that the matchup could headline UFC 300.

“Rocky” has successfully defended his welterweight title twice now following a victory over Colby Covington at UFC 296, while Muhammad is currently the promotion’s #2-ranked welterweight contender and is long overdue for his first shot at UFC gold.

Given the extremely high expectations for UFC 300, Cormier may be correct that Edwards vs. Muhammad unfortunately wouldn't thrill fans as the main event for a card that also includes a strawweight title fight and a BMF title matchup between Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway.
