UFC Main Event Could be Overturned Due to Fighter's Monumental Mistake
Mayra Bueno Silva --- who defeated Holly Holm in the main event of UFC on ESPN 49 on July 15 --- has confessed on Instagram that she failed a pre-fight drug test she took the week prior to her victory.

Silva shared a message to her fans on August 22, describing her "deep regret," and reaffirming that she hadn't taken an illegal substance "in or outside the cage:"
"It is with deep regret that I have to announce I failed a drug test that I took the week of my fight against Holly Holm. I want to begin by saying I have never in my life taken a substance to enhance my ability in or outside the cage."
Silva explained that the medication she was flagged for was consistent with the prescription medication she takes for her ADHD.
"I have provided a plethora of documents and explanations to USADA and the Nevada State Commission explaining the disorder," Silva continued. "...I discontinued this medication at the beginning of fight week, like I always have in the past... I am told by experts that it would not have an effect on my in-competition performance..."
The UFC and USADA have measures in place which Silva and Co. could have used to avoid the controversy. Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) are accessible to UFC fighters to ensure they can use appropriate medications for any illnesses or conditions:
"In some situations, an athlete may have an illness or condition that requires the use of medication listed on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List. USADA can grant a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) in these situations in compliance with the World Anti-Doping Agency International Standard for TUEs." (via USADA)
Not using a TUE is a significant oversight on Silva's part and that of her team, which could potentially lead to the overturning of the Holm fight. Silva explained that she ceased taking the medication during fight week, indicating an awareness on her and her team's part about the implications of the drug.

If Silva can recuperate after this mistake remains yet to be seen. For now, we could be looking at another unexpected Holm main event if they run it back.
