Two former Fresno State football greats - and brothers - have teamed up to provide a significant boost to the school's collective.

Per the Fresno Bee, former Bulldog and NFL quarterbacks David and Derek Carr have made the largest donation that collective BulldogBread has ever accepted.

The Bee didn’t have the dollar figure, but another former Bulldogs quarterback, Marcus McMaryion, who is the collective’s development director, said it was a “significant push forward for Fresno State in the NIL game.”

The Carrs’ donation will support efforts to recruit and retain top players and potentially spark small-dollar donations from other Fresno State fans and supporters.

If any two former Fresno State players can move the needle it’s the two former quarterbacks, who are among nine former Bulldogs who have their numbers retired.

Derek is still playing in the NFL, having wrapped up the 2023 season with the New Orleans Saints. He threw for 3,878 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions for the Saints. The four-time Pro Bowler has thrown for nearly 40,000 yards in his career, along with 242 touchdowns.

With Fresno State, he was a two-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year, the 2013 Sammy Baugh Award winner and threw for 12,843 yards, 113 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.

David was a star at Fresno State before Derek. In 2001 he was a second-team All-American and winner of both the Johnny Unitas and Sammy Baugh awards after he threw for 4,839 yards, 46 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

The Houston Texans made David Carr the No. 1 overall selection in 2002. He didn’t have his younger brother’s NFL career, as he threw for just 14,452 yards, 65 touchdowns and 71 interceptions. But, he did win a Super Bowl ring as Eli Manning’s backup with the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.
