UNC Football Makes Move to Attract Athletes From the Portal
UNC football has shown promising signs throughout the past few seasons. With quarterback Drake Maye leading the way, UNC could've been better, but an 8-5 season was a step in the right direction for a program on the rise.
In an effort to improve, UNC is running a campaign with a goal of $5 million for the year. The campaign shows the growth of NIL since the NCAA allowed players to make money on their Name, Image, and Likeness.
According to Salman Khan of BNN Breaking, the campaign is for UNC to land players in the NCAA Transfer Portal.
"At the heart of this initiative is the legendary coach Mack Brown, who envisions leveraging NIL deals not only to retain his squad's top talents but also to make North Carolina a magnetic destination for standout athletes from the NCAA Transfer Portal, especially focusing on bolstering the defensive line."
UNC has multiple players coming in from the Transfer Portal next season, an effort to improve in a tough ACC.
The college football landscape continues to change and this is one sign that points to what it can become. It starts off at $5 million but in a few years, UNC could be looking for $10-plus million to land players in the portal.
Maryland's Mike Locksley recently said that his third-string running back was looking for $100,000 or he was entering the portal. If that's how much a running back who doesn't play much costs, we can only imagine how much an impact transfer will be.
UNC is getting ahead of the curve here with this idea. The portal has played a major impact in recruiting and the more NIL money, the better for the program.
It's been a long time coming for student-athletes to get paid. Now that they can, schools have to keep up with the latest trends to field a competitive team.
