Why Is This 17-Year NBA Veteran Still A Free Agent?

17-year NBA veteran Rudy Gay is still a free agent.

Rudy Gay has been one of the best players in NBA history to never make an All-Star Game.

The 17-year NBA veteran is not the star player that he once was but is still a capable role player who is coming off a season with averages of 5.2 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists per contest while shooting 38.0% from the field and 25.4% from the three-point range in 56 games for the Utah Jazz.

This summer, Gay was traded several times, and the Oklahoma City Thunder waived him in July.

Currently, he remains a free agent that is available to be signed by any team in the league.

In addition to the Jazz, Gay has also played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs (he was initially the eighth pick in the 2006 NBA Draft).

His career averages are 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 steals per contest while shooting 45.2% from the field and 34.6% from the three-point range in 1,120 regular season games (he has also appeared in 19 NBA playoff games).

Considering Gay is a long-time veteran, it's surprising that he still remains a free agent this late into the offseason.

There are many teams that could benefit from adding him to their roster.

A contending team looking for depth or a rebuilding franchise in need of veteran leadership in their locker room would make sense for the 37-year-old.

He will be a name to keep an eye on over the next few weeks.
