BREAKING: Atlanta Hawks Reportedly Sign 14-Year NBA Veteran
UPDATE: The Hawks have officially signed Wesley Matthews.
Wesley Matthews is coming off a year where he played 52 regular season games for the Milwaukee Bucks and averaged 3.4 points and 2.2 rebounds per contest while shooting 36.3% from the field and 31.5% from the three-point range (he also appeared in two NBA playoff games).
On Friday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Matthews will sign with the Atlanta Hawks.
Via Wojnarowski: "Free agent G Wesley Matthews has agreed on a one-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks, sources tell ESPN. Matthews, 36, joins the Hawks after two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks."
Matthews had a down year, but he is a reliable veteran who has a lot of experience.
In addition to the Bucks, the 36-year-old has also played for the Utah Jazz, Portland Trail Blazers, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and Los Angeles Lakers over 14 NBA seasons.
His career averages are 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 42.0% from the field and 37.6% from the three-point range in 950 regular season games (he has also appeared in 66 NBA playoff games).
The Hawks have made the NBA playoffs for three straight seasons (and the Eastern Conference Finals in 2021), but they are a young team.
Therefore, Matthews will be an excellent addition to their locker room.
This past year, the Hawks were the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference and had a 41-41 record.
They lost to the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs (in six games).
