UPDATE: The Brooklyn Nets have officially released Edmond Sumner.

Edmond Sumner is coming off a season where he averaged 7.1 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per contest while shooting 46.1% from the field and 35.6% from the three-point range in 53 games for the Brooklyn Nets.

On Friday evening, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the Nets will likely release the five-year NBA veteran.

Via Scotto: "The Brooklyn Nets are expected to release Edmond Sumner, league sources told @hoopshype. Sumner was a spark plug off the bench averaging 7.1 points in 13.9 minutes last season. The 27-year-old guard is expected to have several potential suitors."

In addition to the Nets, Sumner has also spent time with the Indiana Pacers (he was initially the 52nd pick in the 2017 NBA Draft).

His career averages are 6.2 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per contest while shooting 47.0% from the field and 34.1% from the three-point range in 161 regular season games (he has also appeared in 5 NBA playoff games).

Sumner could be a good pickup for a contending team in need of depth.

This past year, the Nets were the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and got swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs by James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers.

They were swept for the second year in a row after also losing in the first round (to the Boston Celtics) in 2022.

That said, the franchise is in rebuilding mode after trading superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving during the middle of the season.
