Did The Miami Heat Make A Mistake?
Bol Bol is coming off the best season of his four-year NBA career, as he averaged 9.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.2 blocks per contest while shooting 54.6% from the field in 70 games for the Orlando Magic.
Earlier this month, the 23-year-old was waived by the Magic, and on Sunday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Bol Bol is signing a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns.
Via Wojnarowski: "ESPN Sources: Free agent F/C Bol Bol has agreed on a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns. At 23, Bol had his best NBA season with Orlando: 9.1 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 blocks in 21.5 minutes. Another developing talent to join a deepened bench rotation."
Bol Bol has the chance to be an excellent addition to the Suns, but I believe the Miami Heat should have signed him.
Why?
The Heat are one of the best teams in the NBA and are coming off an impressive season where they made the Finals as the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference.
One of the reasons they were mediocre during the regular season was that the team struggled to rebound and protect the rim.
Last year, the Heat ranked last in the NBA for blocks per game (3.1), and 25th for rebounds (48.7).
All-Star center Bam Adebayo is one of their top players, but adding someone like Bol Bol to come off the bench would have been a smart move.
In addition, the 23-year-old was once seen as a potential star (ESPN ranked him as the fourth-best player in the high school class of 2018).
The Heat are known for their ability to bring the best out of players, and he would have been able to play a vital role in improving their rebounding and shot-blocking for the 2023-24 season.
