LeBron James' Viral Tweet To Gregg Popovich
On Saturday, the San Antonio Spurs announced that head coach Gregg Popovich signed a contract extension with the franchise.
Popovich has been at the helm since the 1996-97 season, and the Spurs have won five NBA Championships in that period.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, his new deal is worth over $80 million.
Via Wojnarowski: "Spurs coach Gregg Popovich’s new five-year deal is worth more than $80 million, sources tell ESPN. His deal resets the coaching market after Monty Williams’ recent six-year, $78.5 million deal with Detroit."
Following the news, Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James sent out a tweet to Popovich.
His post had over 22,000 likes and 1.4 million impressions in less than three hours.
James tweeted: "POP!!!!!! Congrats on the new deal. Next wine dinner on you 🍷🍷😁😉"
During the 2004 Olympics, Popovich was an assistant coach for Team USA, so the two were on the same team.
In addition, James and Popovich have had several battles in the NBA Finals.
When James was on the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Spurs swept them to win the 2007 NBA Championship.
James and the Spurs also faced off in the Finals in back-to-back seasons when he was on the Miami Heat.
The Heat won the 2013 NBA Championship but lost in 2014 to the Spurs.
This past year, James led the Lakers to the Western Conference Finals, while the Spurs missed the Playoffs for the fourth straight season.
According to StatMuse, James has gone 22-19 in 41 regular season games against the Spurs.
