San Antonio Spurs Release A Player
Javante McCoy is coming off a year where he played in the G League for the South Bay Lakers.
The former Boston University star averaged 14.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest while shooting 52.4% from the field and 37.0% from the three-point range in 29 regular season games (he has also appeared in 15 Showcase Cup games and on G League playoff game).
Recently, Hoops Rumors reported that McCoy had signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the San Antonio Spurs.
However, McCoy has now been officially waived.
Keith Smith of Spotrac first reported the news and added more details.
Via Smith on September 20: "The San Antonio Spurs have waived Javante McCoy, a league source told @spotrac.
McCoy is likely to land with the Austin Spurs of the G League for this upcoming season."
McCoy initially went undrafted last summer after playing five seasons for the Terriers.
He finished his final year of college with averages of 17.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.1 steals per contest while shooting 49.5% from the field and 42.5% from the three-point range in 35 games.
These kind of deals are typical during the offseason, as a player will be signed and then waived (usually joining the NBA team's G League affiliate).
Meanwhile, the Spurs are coming off a season where they were the 15th seed in the Western Conference with a 22-60 record.
They have missed the NBA playoffs for four straight seasons but recently drafted Victor Wembanyama with the first pick in the 2023 Draft.
