Utah Jazz Waive Recent First-Round Pick On Thursday
Acquiring him in the offseason trade that sent All-Star center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Utah Jazz have decided to waive 2020 first-round pick Leandro Bolmaro, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Shams Charania: “The Utah Jazz are waiving guard Leandro Bolmaro, sources tell me and @Tjonesonthenba.
Bolmaro, 22, was drafted 23rd overall in 2020 by the New York Knicks and was dealt to Minnesota for the No. 25 and No. 33 overall picks, which turned into Immanuel Quickley and Daniel Oturu. The Knicks then dealt Oturu in another trade during the draft.
After getting drafted, Bolmaro opted to stay overseas with FC Barcelona until he paid his buyout clause in 2021 to join the Timberwolves.
During his first season in the league, Bolmaro played in a total of 35 games, averaging 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds per game while shooting 17-54, 31.5 percent from the floor.
With the Utah Jazz this season, Leandro Bolmaro only played in 14 games, scoring a total of six points on 3-20 shooting, 15.0 percent.
A member of Argentina’s national team, Bolmaro recently won the gold medal with the senior team in the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup.
Set to become a free agent after being waived by the Jazz, Bolmaro’s NBA future is certainly in doubt, as he could very much pursue other opportunities overseas.
The Jazz, who already had an open roster spot, will have 13 active players on their roster following this transaction. They are only allowed to have below 14 players on their active roster during the season for a total of two weeks, so Utah will need to sign a player to a standard contract for the remainder of the season.
