Despite clinching pole position for the United States Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc found himself bewildered by his car's unexpected performance. "I cannot understand where we are," he expressed, hinting at the unpredictability of this year's competition.

Key Takeaways:

  • Leclerc experienced a surge in confidence with the car from the outset of the qualifying session.
  • Although Max Verstappen initially outpaced Leclerc, his lap time was later disqualified, gifting the pole to the Monegasque driver.
  • Charles stressed the unpredictability of this year, admitting, "I cannot quite understand where we are."

As the dust settled on the Circuit of the Americas, Charles Leclerc, who has been an epitome of grace and precision on the track, found himself in a position he hadn't anticipated - pole. From the commencement of the qualifying rounds, it was evident that Leclerc was in his element.

"From the first lap, we built up the confidence. I built up the confidence with the car and I felt good straightaway," he said in the post-qualifying press conference.

"So then in qualifying, I tried to put everything together. The first lap in Q3 felt quite a bit better than the second lap. But I think there was a bit of track improvement.

Even as the competition heated up, Leclerc's performance spoke volumes about his raw talent. Although Max Verstappen initially seemed to have the edge with a faster lap time, a subsequent deletion of his time due to track limits meant that Leclerc's performance handed him the pole.

However, securing the pole didn't shield Leclerc from the enigma that has surrounded his team's performance this season. When quizzed about his anticipations leading into the session, he candidly replied:

"I don't think anymore. I stopped thinking a long time ago, because this year, I cannot quite understand where we are."

This statement resonates deeply with fans and analysts who've watched the ups and downs of The Scuderia this season. This car seems to show performance sporadically through the sessions, with the drivers admitting it's an animal that's yet to be tamed.

His sentiments underline a broader narrative in this year's F1 saga. Even with optimal conditions and a car that feels right, the outcomes remain as unpredictable as ever at COTA. Charles summarised it perfectly:

"Yeah, it's very difficult to anticipate where you're going to be during the weekend. So for now, we are just focused on ourselves. The car felt good. So yeah, and then I was positively surprised anyway, because even if everything felt really good, I did not expect to be fighting for pole."
