F1 News: Could Lance Stroll Be In Hot Water - "Prioritise The Good Of The Team"
F1 fans have been discussing the future of the Aston Martin team as Mercedes draw closer in the constructors' championship.
After the Monaco Grand Prix, Mercedes are now just one point behind Aston Martin. Fernando Alonso showed an incredible performance crossing the line in second place with his teammate Lance Stroll having a terrible time and retiring from the race. Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, as the Mercedes team brought in significant upgrades to the weekend.
Alonso is currently third in the drivers' standings with 93 points, whereas Stroll is in eighth position with 27 points. The two Mercedes drivers are closer together with Hamilton in fourth position with 69 points and Russell in fifth position with 50 points.
The ongoing dominance of Alonso in the Aston Martin team has led fans to discuss the future of the team and how Stroll would fit into this. One fan posted to Twitter:
"The fact that Mercedes are only 1 point behind Aston... At what point does Lawrence Stroll prioritise the good of the team over his son?"
One fan thinks that keeping the team lower down in the rankings is a strategical move in order to gain more wind tunnel time. They commented:
"Lawrence is playing a blinder, money is not important. Keeping Lance keeps them further down in the constructors so they get more development time. It is all part of the plan"
Another fan felt the same, bringing up the point of more wind tunnel time. They responded:
"I don't think they'd mind finishing 3rd or 4th... Lawrence has money, they don't need to rely on the prize money for development. On the other hand, finishing lower in the standings would give them more time in the wind tunnel and CFD for 2024."
There is no doubt that Stroll is a good driver, however, being in a team with two-time champion Alonso is maybe not working in his favour, according to some fans. One commented:
"I’ve been thinking this exact thing. He says he likes to win, how can he when he’s handicapping his own time an. Lance Stroll is okay at best and Alonso is showing that every single week"
Someone else had a different suggestion of Stroll following in his father's footsteps rather than continuing to drive. They wrote:
"Hear me out, lance retires, follows in his dad's steps and manages the business, let him take care of Aston Martin young driver academy too. Pair up Alonso and another talented driver like Yuki, Albon from one of the lower teams and let them do the job."
Another fan jumped to Stroll's defence, writing:
"He’s a multi discipline champion, pole sitter and podium placed driver. Gets a lot of heat because his dad is minted, proven himself already this season, who’s better at the moment and could take seat 2 at Aston? No one I’d argue."
